10-year-old’s stance on racism stuns Oregon City Council

A child dominated an Oregon council meeting this week as he taught attendees about the harsh realities of racism after a dead raccoon was dropped on the doorstep of the city’s mayor.

on June 5 Mayor Ed Fitch of Redmond, who is white, discovered a poignant note taped to the corpse of a dead raccoon near the front door of his law office. Fitch did not reveal the full contents of the letter, but he did tell The Washington Post that it contained “intimidating” language about him and Redmond’s first and only black city councilman, Clifford Evelyn.

“It looked like the raccoon had bled out there,” Fitch previously told The Post.

According to the newspaper, Evelyn recognized the dead raccoon by it racial implications.

City council members discussed the incident at Tuesday’s meeting, a local outlet said KTVZ bend.

In a prepared statement, Evelyn said the “cowardly act” was “something from the 1950s and 1960s.”

He said the act represented a “pattern of behavior with specific individuals” in the community, claiming that racial incidents began to increase once he took office.

“Dog whistles and gestures will not deter me from my duties as a city council,” he said.

After Evelyn thanked the citizens for their support, other community members took to the stage. However, it was 10-year-old Gavin who shook the hall in unprecedented applause.

“Why should we black people suffer from racism when there are other races that kill and (robber) while we black people are respectful and nice, but we’re still treated like shit?” he said. “We shouldn’t be treated like this.”

Gavin, who is in fourth grade, described his traumatizing racial experiences at school. He said he was repeatedly labeled racist and equated with a monkey, a racist caricature of black people.

“A girl said to me, ‘I’d hit you, but that’s called animal cruelty,'” Gavin claimed.

“We shouldn’t be treated like this,” he added. “We should be treated equally. This is not fair to us black people.”

Redmond police said the incident is being investigated as a possible second-degree bias.

“The Redmond Police Department will not tolerate any form of hate speech against any person or group,” Police Chief Devin Lewis said in the statement.

“We will work quickly to resolve this matter and try to hold accountable those who did this to our community.”
