Seventeen people, including 16 children, have been taken to hospital after falling 15 to 20 feet near Fort Gibraltar in St. Boniface, emergency services said on Wednesday.

“At 9:55 a.m. today, we received an 911 call in Whittier Park for a school group that had fallen,” Jason Shaw, an assistant chief of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service, told reporters on Wednesday.

Three of the children were in an unstable condition; the other 13 children and the adult were in stable condition, he said. The children are 10 and 11 years old.

Emergency responders and health care providers will hold a press conference at 2 p.m. CT outside the Children’s Hospital. CBC will livestream the press conference on this page.

The children were students from St. John’s-Ravenscourt School on a field trip, CBC has confirmed.

Chantelle Craig said she saw at least two children come out of Fort Gibraltar on stretchers on Wednesday morning, and about five children walked into ambulances unaided.

“It seemed like all hands were on deck and everyone was doing what they had to do,” she told reporters on Wednesday.

Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham said his thoughts are with the injured and their families a tweet.

Shortly before noon on Wednesday, a large emergency medical services vehicle was seen outside the emergency room of Winnipeg Children’s Hospital.

Police are also on the scene Wednesday morning at the historic site in northern St. Boniface, Police Const. said Claude Chancy.
