The body of an Ohio man was recovered Friday from Utah’s Lake Powell after he failed to resurface after jumping off a cliff, officials said.
The incident happened around 11:45 a.m. Thursday at Buoy 89 on Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, the National Park Service (NPS) said in a press release.
The victim, identified as Cory Ryan Ehrnschwender, 36, of Cincinnati, had jumped into the lake from a height of about 50 feet but did not resurface, witnesses told officials.
Rangers from the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and officers from the Utah Department of Natural Resources and Kane County Sheriff’s Office conducted an initial search for Ehrnschwender, but were unsuccessful.

On Friday morning, a dive team used side-scan sonar to find Ehrnschwender and retrieve his body in about 30 feet of water, officials said.
No cause of death was stated at the time of release. A coroner in Salt Lake City is expected to perform an autopsy.

Officials warned the public that it is prohibited to jump or dive from rock walls, ledges or man-made structures from a height of 4.5 meters or more above the water.

Buoy 89 is located in Kane County, Utah, approximately 90 miles from Glen Canyon Dam.
