An emotional Dadeville police chief on Sunday begged prayers for his city and law enforcement officials begged for tips from the public in finding those responsible for a birthday party shooting that left four dead and several injured.

“The city of Dadeville is a close-knit community, full of wonderful people. I ask that you please keep our community in your prayers. I ask that you please keep my police station in your prayers,” Police Chief Jonathan Floyd said at a news conference.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Sergeant Jeremy Burkett confirmed that the shooting broke out at a birthday party and asked any witnesses to call the state police tip line at .

Burkett also confirmed that four people were killed and that “a large number” of people were injured, but did not disclose the condition of those injured.

Burkett took no questions during the press conference. He has not released information on whether any arrests have been made in the incident.

Raymond Porter, superintendent of schools in Tallapoosa County, said grief counselors will be at Dadeville schools on Monday, but did not say whether any students were among the dead or injured.

The district will “make every effort to comfort affected children,” Porter said.

“Don’t lose sight of the fact that they are the ones most affected by this situation,” said Porter, who also called on local clergy to provide assistance to the families of the dead or injured.

“I also ask that you please don’t let this moment dictate how you feel about the city of Dadeville,” Floyd said. “What we’re dealing with is something that no community should have to endure.”
