Four people were killed and several others injured in a shooting in Alabama Saturday night that was related to a birthday party, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

The incident occurred around 10:34 p.m. Saturday night near the 200 block of Broadnax Street in Dadeville, Alabama. Dadeville is about two hours southeast of Birmingham.

“Four lives have been tragically lost in this incident and there have been a large number of injuries,” Burkett said.

Burkett did not share any information about the events leading up to the shooting, or whether any suspects were in custody.

Officials also did not share what kind of birthday party was related to the shooting, but Tallapoosa County Schools Superintendent Raymond Porter, who also spoke at the press conference, said guidance will be provided to students on Monday.

The shooting happened at a birthday party for a 16-year-old and most of the victims are teenagers, Ben Hayes, a local pastor, told The associated press.

President Joe Biden was informed of the shooting that he says took place “at a teen’s birthday party” in Dadeville and is monitoring the situation, according to a note from his team. Biden and the White House have been in contact with law enforcement and local officials to offer support.

“What happened to our country if children can’t go to a birthday party without fear?” Biden said in a statement released Sunday about the shooting in Alabama and another in Louisville. “If parents have to worry every time their kids walk out the door to school, to the movies, or to the park? Guns are the number one killer of children in America, and the numbers are increasing—not decreasing.”

Dadeville Police Chief Jonathan Floyd described the town as “a tight-knit community full of wonderful people.”

“What we’ve been dealing with is something that no community should have to go through,” said Floyd. “I’m just asking for your patience, it’s going to be a long process.”

Burkett said the investigation into the incident is ongoing and encouraged anyone with information to come forward.

“This morning I grieve with the people of Dadeville and my fellow Alabamans. Violent crime has NO place in our state, and we will be closely monitored by law enforcement as details emerge,” Alabama Governor Kay Ivey said in a statement posted to Twitter on Sunday.
