At least 121 people have died in recent days from heatstroke and other conditions brought by intense heat in two cities in northern India’s northern state of Uttar Pradesh, local media reported on Tuesday.
According to the local newspaper Dainik Bhaskar, Prime Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath has instructed hospitals to stay vigilant and offer patients the best possible treatment, following a Monday meeting about the current heatwave in the Ballia region in three days and the reported deaths of 54 people.
Heatwave-related deaths in the Ballia region have risen to 68 since June 15, with 14 more patients dying from heat-related ailments in the last 24 hours, Business Standard reported.
Authorities, however, refuse to confirm the deaths caused by the heatwave. Heading a three-person medical team, Health Director Dr. AK Singh traveled from the state capital, Lucknow, to Ballia on Sunday, but declined to answer reporters’ questions about the death toll, saying the actual causes of death were below. investigation.
According to the Dainik Bhaskar newspaper, Dr. Singh said he could better explain the causes of death after seeing the medical reports.
Fifty-three deaths have been reported in the last two days in the Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh, according to another Prabhat Khabar newspaper. He added that at least 35 people lost their lives in Deoria Medical Faculty and 18 more people who were taken to the main hospital of the district lost their lives.
Chief medical officer of the Deoria School of Medicine, Dr. Rajesh Kumar Jha told the daily newspaper that most of the deceased were elderly and suffered from problems such as high fever, fainting, difficulty breathing and body stiffness.
When called by Anadolu on the phone, Dr. Jha declined to comment on the number of deaths attributed to the heatwave.
In the past few days, several Indian states, including Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, have been witnessing severe heat waves in many areas exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
Last week, 44 people died in the eastern state of Bihar due to hot weather conditions.
Heatwave conditions are expected to continue for a few more days in some Indian states, according to the Indian Meteorological Department.
