On Wednesday, an Iraqi citizen burned a copy of the Muslim holy book, the Qur’an, in front of a mosque in the Swedish capital, Stockholm.

The incident occurred outside the Stockholm Mosque on Medborgarplatsen, before Salwan Momika burned the Quran with words that insulted Islam.

The provocation took place under police protection on the first day of the Muslim religious holiday, Eid al-Adha, also known as Eid al-Adha.

Meanwhile, the Stockholm police were called in front of the mosque as a possible reaction to the provocation.

Mahmut Halfi, the head of the Stockholm Mosque Association, denied the provocation and the permission of the police, saying that the incident deeply saddened Muslims around the world.

Nyans (Nuance) Party Chairman Mikail Yüksel told Anadolu Agency (AA) that the burning of the Holy Quran during the holidays while the Swedish government was working on the headscarf ban in schools deeply injured Muslims.

He added that the Muslim community in Sweden expects support from Turkey in the fight against Islamophobia and the burning of the Qur’an.

On June 12, a Swedish appeals court upheld a lower court’s decision to lift the ban on Quran burning and ruled that police had no legal basis to block two Quran burning protests earlier this year.

In February, police refused to allow two Quran burning attempts, citing security concerns, after far-right Danish politician Rasmus Paludan burned a copy of the Quran in front of the Turkish Embassy in Stockholm in January this year.

Later, two people who tried to organize provocative actions outside the Iraqi and Turkish embassies in Stockholm objected to the decision.

In April, the Stockholm Administrative Court overturned the decision, ruling that the security risks were insufficient to limit the ability to demonstrate.
