NRK commentator Jann Post could not believe his eyes. On an English milean English mile1,609 kilometers in Monaco on Friday, Faith Kipyegon crushed the competition, lowering the old world record by nearly five seconds.

– She sets world records in every race she competes in and it looks so easy. She’s a fantastic runner, says Bjerkeli Grøvdal, who runs 5,000 meters in London on Sunday afternoon.

Kipyegon has had a long running career. With Olympic and World Cup gold in the 1500 meters from 2016 and 2017 respectively, the Kenyan decided to stop his career in 2017 to have children.

In 2018 daughter Alyn was born. In an interview with the Team Kenya website, Kipyegon spoke candidly about how she felt about returning to track and field after giving birth to a child.

– I took a whole year off from running. Four months before birth and eight months after. Coming back was not easy. Your body changes during pregnancy. I have gained a lot of weight. Before that I weighed 45 kilos, after that 53 kilos. Things were not as easy as before. I was tired all the time. But that doesn’t mean you can’t come back. It just means it takes time, Kipyegon has stated.

16 months after his birth, Kipyegon won silver at the World Championships in Doha. Later it became both Olympic gold and World Cup gold, before she pulverized all records this season.

– In my head I was mentally prepared. After having experienced childbirth, I want to come back stronger. For then I want to see my baby run around and give me joy, the running star has said.

Her Norwegian competitor finds it admirable what the 29-year-old has achieved.

– Extra nice that she became so good after becoming a mother. What she’s doing, I believe, is helping show other female athletes and those around her that it’s possible to keep going at the top level, even when you have a family. In that way, she is a great role model for many, says Bjerkeli Grøvdal.

Kipyegon herself thinks it’s about balancing the two important things in life for her: family and running.

– You must be mentally strong. You know you have to be strong because you got the little one. You have to be a mother as well as balance your career because dropping one will affect the other as well.
