A pod of killer whales has attacked and sunk a yacht within the Strait of Gibraltar, between Spain and Morocco, officers confirmed to ABC Information.

Based on the Spanish maritime authority, two folks have been on board the ship when the incident occurred at 9 a.m. native time on Sunday.

The practically 50-foot yacht, named The Alboran Cognac, was 15 miles off Cabo Espartel in Morocco when an unknown variety of killer whales started ramming it.

The couple alerted Spanish authorities and an hour after the assault, a rescue group arrived to free them from the ship, though officers have been unable to avoid wasting the sinking boat.

Based on GT Orca Atlantica, a conservation group, there have been about 700 orca assaults since 2020 and officers consider there are greater than 37 orcas within the Strait of Gibraltar.

The Strait of Gibraltar connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and separates Europe from Africa.

“Through the summer season and autumn of 2020, interplay occasions started to happen between a number of specimens of this species and ships, primarily sailboats, each within the Strait of Gibraltar and within the waters of the Galician coast,” Spanish authorities officers stated. “These interactions ranged from sustained ship approaches to ramming the hull and rudder, inflicting numerous sorts of injury that proceed as we speak.”

It is unclear why orcas assault boats, though specialists hypothesize that the marine mammals goal ships for sport or that they really feel threatened.

In June 2023, racing yachts had an encounter with a pod of killer whales within the Strait of Gibraltar, racing officers stated on the time.

Officers stated there have been no fatalities within the incident.
