Actor and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says he believes it’s “not a good idea” that he could win the presidency in 2024 — if he could run for election.

Schwarzenegger, who was born in Austria and served as governor of the Golden State from 2003 to 2011, made the remarks during a recent sit-down interview on Max and CNN’s “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?”

“The Constitution says the president must be a native American citizen. If not, would you have run for president?” Wallace asked Schwarzenegger.

“Well, of course,” Schwarzenegger replied. “I mean I think the field was wide open in 2016. And I think the field is open now. I mean think about it now. I mean who’s there? There really isn’t a person who can bring everyone who is here today that people say okay, he’s not too old, or he’s not too this or too that, or is that because now the question is who are you voting for then who are you voting for?”

“You say you were going to be president in 2024,” Wallace continued.

“Absolutely,” Schwarzenegger replied. “Put me in because it’s, look — it’s not a good idea. I see so clearly how I could win that election.”

“I mean it’s like me and California,” he added. “And when that, you know, ran for governor, it was clear that people were looking for a new answer, not a right wing or a left wing, but someone who can bring the nation together and not see the other side as the enemy. … There are so many things that need to be done. And can be done. And what makes it so great is because it’s all doable. It’s all doable, or at least it’s just people coming together and say yes, we can do it.”

If he were eligible to make a successful run for the White House, Schwarzenegger, now 75, would be the second former governor of California to serve as president, after Ronald Reagan.

Under the Constitution, to become president, a person must be 35 years old, be a native American citizen, and have lived in the United States for at least 14 years.

During the interview, Schwarzenegger also suggested that he doesn’t believe former President Donald Trump has what it takes to win re-election in 2024, saying, “I don’t think it’s going to happen.”

“But I mean, that’s just my thought,” he continued. “I just don’t think you’ll get re-elected with 30 percent or 33 percent of the people voting for you in your polls.”

“I think those are great polls among conservatives. But I think when you add it all up, it’s not enough,” he added.
