Rescue workers sift through the rubble after two S-300 rockets hit the center of Ukraine’s second-largest city.
At least seventeen people have been injured, two of them seriously, after Russian rockets hit residential buildings in the city of Kharkiv.
Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov said two S-300 rockets struck buildings in the center of Ukraine’s second-largest city late Tuesday night, sending 14 people to hospital.
“Two women are in serious condition,” he said in a message on Telegram.
Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said the rockets hit “exactly where there is no military infrastructure and exactly where there is housing.”
“There are at least ten damaged buildings. Rescue teams continue to search the rubble,” he wrote on Telegram. “And there is plenty of rubble.”
Ukrainian emergency services said one of the rockets hit a three-story building that previously housed a medical center.
Located just 30 km from the border with Russia in northeastern Ukraine, Kharkiv has been regularly bombed since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of the country in February 2022.
There was no immediate comment from Moscow on the attack on Kharkov, but the Defense Ministry said air defenses had destroyed seven Ukrainian missiles and four drones over Russia’s Belgorod region, about 80 km from Kharkov.
The region’s governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said there were no immediate reports of casualties.
Russian troops advanced through parts of the Kharkov region shortly after the invasion of Ukraine, but were pushed back in September 2022 during a rapid Ukrainian advance.
