The husband of a Turkish woman, who was seriously injured after a Queens man stuck his head in the subway in New York, stated that the attack was not just against his wife, but against all New Yorkers.
While waiting for positive developments regarding his wife Emine Yılmaz Özsoy, Ferdi Özsoy said in a statement to Anadolu: “This is an act of violence not only against my wife, but also against all New Yorkers.” Emine, 35, is an award-winning artist and illustrator who was critically hospitalized after the brutal subway attack.
Kamal Semrade, 39, alleged to be the perpetrator and reported to be homeless, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with attempted murder in the attack against Özsoy.
Reminding the day of the incident, Ferdi Özsoy shared that he was called by the police, that he informed him of the subway incident and that his wife was taken to the hospital.
“Emine’s neck was broken. She can’t move at all right now,” said Özsoy, “I came to New York and my surgery took about 11 hours in the late hours.
“During the surgery she fought like a warrior. She is a woman who overcomes obstacles. She is a woman who always follows her dreams. She is an artist. She is a friend. He thanked the New Yorkers who helped Emine at the scene, the witnesses, the detectives involved in the investigation, and the New York Police Department, who caught the attacker in a short time.
“I was hoping the mayor would call us and check on us,” he said.
Emphasizing the importance of subways as “the lifeblood of the city”, he questioned the hopes of a thriving city when an artist was tragically victimized. He also emphasized the necessity of security in the underground transportation system that connects various points of the city.
“Measures need to be taken to protect the livelihood of people living in this big city. They need to bring order, they need to invest in subways.”
According to Özsoy, although the New York subway is the “biggest” and “oldest” means of transportation in the world, it is not the “safe”.
Meanwhile, the GoFundMe page was launched to support the Özsoy family’s six-digit health expenditures. By Friday afternoon, the page had raised nearly $195,000 in donations.
“This campaign exists to support Emine’s life after hospital and to give her a fighting chance to enjoy the rest of her journey in this life,” he said. “But right now we are looking for more. It is not donations that we are looking for. But we are looking for a way to get through these difficult times.”
“I hope he will regain his strength to continue creating the fine art he has had over the years, putting his creativity aside and continuing to make people happy,” he added.
