SYDNEY – For decades, Australian policymakers have proposed building a vast railway line across the east of the country to carry freight between the three most populous cities – Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.

Five years ago, work finally began on a 1,700 km “Inland Rail” project that will span three states, reduce delivery times and costs, and provide a major boost to the economy.
