Hoover Institution fellow and conservative author Shelby Steele fell victim to the San Francisco crime crisis when his car was broken into and broken into on Wednesday.
The burglary took place at Hyde and Lombard Street in the Russian Hill area of the city at around 11am. Steele’s son Eli said on Twitter that they got away from the vehicle just 10 minutes before they were broken into.
Photos posted by Eli show his father looking solemnly at the broken windows of their rental car. Eli estimated they lost $25,000 to $30,000 in equipment, not counting damage to the vehicle. The couple was shooting a documentary about San Francisco at the time.
Eli also claimed he was hanged twice by 911 operators when he reported the crime.

“SF police are doing nothing,” Eli wrote on Twitter. “It’s so bad that my friend is calling gang members for help.”
When Eli arrived at the police station, he reportedly encountered more carjacking victims. He reported seeing suspects inspect cars outside the station until onlookers chased them away.
“We yelled at them. They pulled a gun on my friend,” Eli wrote on Twitter. He’s filing a report now. Not a single police officer showed up.’
“People asked where this was. On top of famous Lombard Street,” Eli added. “One of the wealthiest neighborhoods in SF and America. I’ve worked in dangerous neighborhoods for years and nothing like this.’
Twitter CTO Elon Musk responded to Steele’s tweet, telling him that Twitter employees in San Francisco were facing similar crimes.

“Many Twitter employees feel unsafe coming to work in downtown SF with their car windows smashed,” Musk wrote. “They also got such a zero response from the police that they rarely bother to report it anymore because nothing happens.”
San Francisco Republican Party chairman John Dennis told Fox News Digital he was “saddened, but not surprised” by the situation.
“The Steeles interviewed me in my yard for almost two hours yesterday for an upcoming documentary,” Dennis explained. “Sometime after I left my house, thieves showed the Steeles what San Francisco is all about today: victimizing decent, hard-working people.”

“San Francisco is run by incompetent people. Shelby and Eli Steele learned that right away. It hurts to say this about the place I love to live (in), but stay away from San Francisco until the crime is under control the statement said.
The San Francisco Police Department told Fox News Digital they are currently investigating the crime.

“Agents have documented this incident,” explains a spokesperson. “No arrests have been made. This is an active and ongoing investigation.”
