Azerbaijan said on Sunday that Armenia is trying to organize reconnaissance flights over the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and the Lachin region.

“A quadcopter belonging to illegal Armenian armed groups (also) attempted to conduct a reconnaissance flight over the positions of our troops in the direction of Tagaverd village in Khojavend district,” the statement from the Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan said.

In the statement, it was stated that the attempts were prevented after the urgent measures taken by the Azerbaijani army.

It was reported that Armenian forces opened fire on Azerbaijani military positions in Kelbajar district and Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

“On July 8, from 22:35 to 23:10 (1835GMT – 1910GMT), the positions of our army in Shusha and Kelbajar districts were also fired by members of illegal Armenian armed groups in Russian-occupied Azerbaijani lands. The peacekeeping force has been temporarily deployed,” the statement said, adding that retaliatory measures were taken.

The statement also stated that the activities of illegal Armenian armed groups, which wanted to “expand supply routes in various directions, dig trenches, prepare shelters and install security cameras in combat positions”, were stopped by the countermeasures taken by the Azerbaijani forces.

Relations between the two former Soviet republics have been strained since 1991, when the Armenian army occupied Nagorno-Karabakh and seven neighboring regions, internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan.

In the fall of 2020, during the 44-day conflict, Azerbaijan liberated many cities, villages and settlements from Armenian occupation. The peace agreement brokered by Russia is celebrated as a victory in Azerbaijan.

Despite the ongoing peace agreement negotiations between Baku and Yerevan, tensions between neighboring countries have escalated in recent months due to the Lachin corridor, which is the only land route that provides Armenia’s access to Karabakh.
