BANGKOK – People in the Thai capital Bangkok witnessed the strange sight of their shadows disappearing completely on Thursday.

At 12:16 p.m., the city experienced the rare shadowless phenomenon as the sun moved directly overhead.

The shadows of all vertical objects — people, trees, skyscrapers, and poles — vanished a few minutes before the Sun and Earth went out of sync.

The zero shadow day occurs twice a year at all locations between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, a band that extends around the Earth 23.5 degrees north and south of the equator.

According to the Thai Meteorological Service (TMD), the sun in Thailand is directly overhead on one day in April or May and on another day in July or August.

Thailand’s first shadow-free day this year took place on April 4 in the country’s southernmost district of Betong in Yala province. The phenomenon is gradually moving north and will arrive in Chiang Rai’s northernmost district of Mae Sai on May 22, the TMD said.

Bangkok residents will get to see the phenomenon again this year on August 16 at 12:22 p.m.

The TMD added that the zero shadow day is not necessarily the hottest day of the year, as the temperature also depends on factors such as rainfall, cloud cover, accumulated heat and monsoon conditions. THE NATION/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
