Kevin Kaardal, the superintendent of Central Okanagan Public Schools in Kelowna, BC, says in a statement that the regional athletic meeting staff intervened last week and eventually moved the girls’ event across the field.

He says people who “approached the student and family” have been identified and steps have been taken to “formally ban them from any property or events in the precinct.”

The girl’s mother took to Facebook to say her daughter was “shaken up”, adding that the girl was born female and uses she/her pronouns but has a pixie haircut.

BC Prime Minister David Eby said on Twitter on Tuesday that the incident was horrible and unacceptable and that people should “continue to cry out transphobia when they see it.”

Kelowna RCMP says they have received several messages from concerned citizens and are investigating the claims.
“We also share everyone’s serious concerns about discriminatory behavior,” says the detachment.

The man identified on Facebook by the girl’s mother did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
