During Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit, President Biden will bring to justice the US ally, which has grown cooler with the current administration, and move closer to Russia and even China amid tensions between Washington and those countries.
“Modi’s visit comes at a critical time for both countries,” Siddhartha Dubey, an adjunct professor at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, told Fox News Digital. The “US needs as much support (if) it can get to counter the belligerence of Russia and China and Biden needs to show a foreign policy success.”
India and the US shared a rosier dynamic during the Trump administration, with each leader speaking highly of his counterpart. That dynamic initially cooled when Biden took office and India appeared to give some support to Russia despite President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, which much of the world has condemned.
Modi began his visit to the US on Tuesday with a stop in New York City to hold talks with business and opinion leaders before arriving on Wednesday to visit the White House and dine with the president. Biden plans to speak formally with Modi on Thursday, when the two will discuss a number of security and economic concerns, with Biden aiming to bring India closer to the US.

modes told the Wall Street Journal that “India deserves a much higher, deeper and broader profile and role”, adding that he did not see India’s role as “displacing any country” but that the country is simply “acquiring its rightful position in the world” .

He also dismissed criticism from some parts of the US about India’s soft response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, arguing that “this kind of perception” is not widespread in the US and that India’s position is “widely known and well understood is in the world”. ”

“Unlike Xi Jinping in China, India’s Modi has remained constructively engaged with the US, presenting a golden opportunity for the Biden administration to build a more productive alliance between two of the world’s largest and economically dynamic democracies” Dezenski told Fox News Digital.
“While personal relationships between leaders are essential, the economic supply of exchange is much more important, especially now,” she stressed. “Quad members United States, Japan and Australia, as well as other democracies, can and should make a more compelling offer to deepen economic, political and military engagement with India.”

India is part of important but competing organizations: the QUAD, comprising the US and Indo-Pacific partners India, Japan and Australia, a dialogue between those countries on security issues; and two groups led by China and Russia called BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
The Chinese-led groups have a strong economic element and encourage trade between the members of each group. The BRICS economic bloc has even discussed a common currency that members could use if the current group wants to expand its membership.

“Modi plays a broader geopolitical role for India as the ‘voice’ of the global south, which can serve as an effective counterweight to China’s corrupting influence,” Dezenki said. “However, we should expect Modi to remain engaged and open to BRICS as a forum for leadership and a multilateral tool at their convenience.”
Trade between the US and India rose to a record $191 billion in 2022, with $20 billion in 2020 for defense sales alone. The Indian diaspora in the US numbers nearly 5 million people and has become an economic, cultural and political powerhouse.

“There is a huge dollar stake in this visit and the growing trade partnership between Delhi and Washington,” explains Dubey. “From weapons to technology to civilian nuclear power deals.”

“Aside from the United Nations’ abstentions in condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and India’s hoarding of cheap Russian oil, the Modi government is firmly in Washington’s camp,” Dubey argued. “The relationship looks different from other key allies such as the UK and South Korea and is still being worked out, but it is a reality that will continue beyond Biden and Modi.”
