Luis Antonio Calel, 26, died when he was dragged away by the overflowing flow of the Icán River, when together with Lorenzo de Jesús López Calel, 22, they tried to cross a baden bridge in Cuyotenango, Suchitepéquez, the relief forces reported.

The Municipal Firefighters reported that on July 4 they were alerted that two people were swept away by the flow of the river when they tried to cross the bridge aboard a motorcycle.

Neighbors of the place detailed that the flow of the river increased due to the rain and that despite this the motorists risked passing, but they could not withstand the pressure of the water and were dragged away.

The lifeguards indicated that Lorenzo de Jesús López Calel, who was traveling as a co-pilot on the motorcycle, managed to get out of the river, for which he was treated and transferred to an assistance center.

The pilot did not have the same luck, he was dragged by the current that carried stones, mud and trees, so lifeguards began the search on the river bank.

On Wednesday, July 5, a kilometer below the river where they were dragged, the motorcycle was located, which was completely destroyed; however, the body of Luis Antonio Calel still did not appear.

Manuela López, mother of the disappeared, indicated that her son went out to pick up Lorenzo, his friend and co-worker, since they had agreed to go for a walk; however, they were swept away by the river.

This Thursday, July 6, after 48 hours of searching, the Cuyotenango Municipal Firefighters reported that they received information from fishermen from the Churirín village, in Mazatenango, about the discovery of a corpse at the mouth of the Icán river towards the sea, for which mobilized personnel to recover the body.
