Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said on Tuesday he would invite India and Indonesia to join a peace initiative to end the war in Ukraine.

In January, the Brazilian leader shared the idea of creating an international organization similar to the G20 to end the conflict, with China leading the peace initiative.

Lula discussed the initiative with other Latin American leaders at a virtual meeting hosted by Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador in March.

“I think it’s time for diplomacy, not war. Everyone knows that Brazil condemns Ukraine’s invasion of land. But at the same time, the continuation of the war will lead to an increase in the death toll,” said Lula. Meeting with Rutte.

Lula condemned the violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of invading Ukraine. However, the 77-year-old president also refused to intervene directly in the war by supplying weapons to the Ukrainian forces, saying he was working for a peaceful solution.

After meeting with Rutte, Lula said his special adviser for International Affairs, Celso Amorim, is currently traveling to Ukraine after visiting Putin, where he will meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in hopes of reaching a peace dialogue.
