Police in Southern California have arrested yet another man they believe is responsible for more than 70 commercial burglaries.

In a press release, Riverside police said 32-year-old Christopher Michael Jackson was arrested on April 12 after a security system at a business alerted officers to a break-in. Police quickly arrived and found Jackson, whom they “immediately recognized” as a “known serial burglar”.

Jackson is sometimes referred to as the “snake burglar” because of his burglary process in which he breaks a window to enter a building and then crawls across the floor to avoid motion-detection alarms. He often cut open safes and stole money before fleeing.

Police believe Jackson, who they say is transient, is responsible for more than 70 commercial burglaries since July 2021 and has been arrested on “numerous occasions” and “recently sentenced to serve six 16-month sentences prison after pleading guilty to 23 felonies.”

however, the Facebook message says laws regarding prison overcrowding meant Jackson spent less than 10 days in jail.

“Legislative changes over the past decade, including AB109, Prop 47 and Prop 57, have made it increasingly difficult to ensure the safety of our citizens, but that hasn’t stopped our tireless efforts to do so,” said Riverside Police Chief Larry Gonzalez.

“We, as a community, must advocate for ourselves and each other to pressure state legislators to make reasonable changes to these laws to protect our residents and businesses,” he added.

“We don’t want more punishment, but we do want more security. Security from being terrorized by common thieves who feast on us and our justice system.”

Jackson had seven outstanding felony warrants at the time of his arrest and police said he is being held at Robert Presley Detention Center on $100,000 bail.
