California suspect charged with arbitrarily setting fire to 68-year-old man in Berkeley: Police

The California man accused of arbitrarily setting a 68-year-old victim on fire has faced criminal charges, police say.

Bradley Marcrum, 24, was charged this week with attempted murder, mayhem and elder abuse. according to FOX 2 San Francisco. He was arrested by the Bay Area Rapid Transit Police (BART) on suspicion of robbery Wednesday.

Police say Marcrum approached the 68-year-old victim near Bonar Street and University Avenue in Berkeley shortly before 8 p.m. on June 28. He then allegedly doused the victim, whom he did not know, with petrol and set it on fire before fleeing. .

The victim suffered life-threatening burns and is now stable. Bystanders were able to extinguish the fire with water and provide assistance before he was taken to hospital.

After reviewing security footage and reviewing witness statements, authorities identified Marcrum as the suspect and arrested him.

Marcrum was transferred to Santa Rita Prison in Dublin, where he is being held without bail.
