Canceled trip: can travel insurance help?

Imagine flying to South Korea to finally see a K-pop girl group in person for the first time. The concert ticket is bought and you are ready to catch the fever and enjoy this unique and exquisite musical experience. Unfortunately, upon arrival in Seoul, you were told that the concert has been canceled for some reason.

What if you attend a Digital Start-up Conference in Berlin, but before you board the plane are told that the organizers are unable to set up for a number of reasons and it can’t go ahead.

In case of event cancellation, travel insurance can certainly help as it provides cover for canceled events.

For a claim to be valid, the following conditions must be met:

  • The cancellation of the event must be beyond the control of the insured.
  • The event cannot take place before your flight back to your home country.
  • The organizer must provide written confirmation that the event has been cancelled.
There are two (2) circumstances that may arise when using this insurance coverage. These are:

  1. Event has been canceled before departure – If you have been notified before traveling to the venue, the maximum amount insured per person is £400 for unused event tickets and specific limits as stated in the insurance policy which covers unused travel arrangements such as flights, accommodations, and excursions, as well as other additional travel costs associated with the trip.
  2. Event is canceled after arrival in the destination country/city – In this case, up to 50% of the travel costs and seven (7) days of accommodation will be covered by the insurance policy.
As this is an additional cover, please check whether your standard or extended policy has this feature. If not, you can always contact the insurer to include this feature.

It is noteworthy that your claim cannot be processed if the event is rescheduled for your flight back home. Also, the insurance should only reimburse those who are not reimbursed by the organizers. The expense claim also does not include the cost of food and drink, as these are regular, recurring, daily expenses.

To experience one cancellation of the event, especially one that you have (significantly) invested in financially and emotionally can be heartbreaking. It is therefore worth making sure that we can recover our deposits should this cancellation occur and we can do so by purchasing the appropriate travel insurance with event cancellation coverage.
