Former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson fired back at Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) Monday night after lawmakers said the two were once in a relationship.
Gaetz made the claim in response to accusations of awkward behavior in a new book by Hutchinson, who served in the White House. Donald Trump as assistant to the then chief of staff Mark Weiden.
In one instance, she wrote that Gaetz ran his thumb across her chin and said, “Has anyone ever told you you’re a national treasure?”
Gaëtz said MSNBC he did not remember the incidents described in the book “and based on Cassidy’s previous false statements, I doubt they occurred.” He also said they dated for “a few weeks” and “broke up amicably.”
Hutchinson rejected that claim during an interview with the network’s Rachel Maddow.
“I never had a relationship with Matt Gaetz,” she said. “I have much higher standards for men, and Matt is honestly a very non-serious politician. We see that today with the commotion he is causing on Capitol Hill with the spending negotiations. And I don’t really have much else to say to someone who is more concerned about getting a healthy bite than actually passing legislation.”
She said she doesn’t hold Gaetz in high regard in terms of trust, and doesn’t think he has the best “track record” when it comes to relationships, but added that at some points they are “good friends ‘ goods.
