Violent clashes resumed on Saturday in the capital Khartoum between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group, according to eyewitnesses.
Eyewitnesses said they heard gunfire and the sounds of clashes with heavy and light weapons from the cities of Omdurman and Bahri, west and north of Khartoum.
Jet fighters were also seen flying over the Sudanese capital. Smoke was seen rising from many points of the city.
Military sources said army forces repelled an RSF attack on their headquarters south of Khartoum.
According to sources, casualties were reported among RSF fighters.
No confirmation has yet been received from the paramilitary group.
Sudan has been devastated by clashes between the army and the RSF since April, which has killed nearly 1,000 civilians and injured thousands, according to local medics.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that more than 2.2 million people have been displaced due to the current conflict in Sudan.
Several ceasefire agreements, in which Saudi and US mediators mediate between conflicting rivals, have failed to end the violence in the country.
Dispute has flared in recent months between the military and the RSF over the integration of the paramilitary group into the armed forces, a key condition for Sudan’s transition deal with political groups.
Sudan has had no functioning government since autumn 2021, when the military dismissed the interim government of Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and declared a state of emergency in a move described by political forces as a “coup.”
The transition period, which began in August 2019 following the overthrow of President Omar al-Bashir, was scheduled to end with elections to be held in early 2024.
