Conservative commentator Charlie Sykes on Monday broke four developments in the federal investigation into Donald Trump’s mishandling of classified documents showing how things just got “very, very real” for the former president.
“The beep just got real, didn’t it?” MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace asked Sykes, the founder of the news network The Bulwark.
Sykes agreed that they had.
“There are a lot of things we don’t know about this research, a lot of things are still hidden,” the expert acknowledged.
But Sykes then emphasized a judge’s ruling that prosecutors can break claims of attorney-client privilege in the case; the significance of Special Prosecutor Jack Smith attend a meeting between Justice Department officials and Trump attorneys; reconvening the grand jury in the investigation; and the fact that Trump is “losing his mind” on social media with “Mar-a-Lago capitals.”
“These are all pieces of evidence,” he said. “We don’t know what the prosecutors are going to do. We don’t know what the charge will be, what the headline will be. But we know that it has become very real.
Trump himself seemed to suggest Monday he was about to be charged in the case one of the many legal problems he faces.
The former president is under criminal investigation for trying to reverse his election loss in Georgia in 2020 and for his role in the January 6 uprising. He is also expected to go on trial in 2024 over the investigation into Stormy Daniels’ payment of hush money.
