New information revealed that a shooting in Annapolis, Maryland, that left three dead on Sunday, occurred after an argument over parking.
The suspected gunman, 43-year-old Charles Robert Smith, confronted the victims outside his Annapolis home after they approached his mother, Shirley Smith, to discuss the parking issue after she called a local parking enforcement officer to complain that a vehicle was had been parked. blocked their driveway, loading documents said.
“We know those things happened,” Annapolis Police Chief Edward Jackson said when asked about the parking dispute, but declined to elaborate on a motive for the shooting.
Smith became involved after an argument broke out between his mother and one of the victims, 27-year-old Mario Antonio Mireles Ruiz, the documents say. The encounter turned physical and Smith reportedly pulled out a gun and shot both Mireles Ruiz and 25-year-old Christian Marlon Segovia.

Others at the party saw Mireles Ruiz lying on the floor and ran to Smith’s home, the documents said. Smith then reportedly went inside and began shooting from the front window with a long rifle, killing Nicholas Mireles, the father of Mario Mireles Ruiz, and injuring the three other victims, the documents said.
Smith surrendered to police without incident after the shooting. He reportedly claimed that he opened fire because a shot was fired at his house, although witnesses told authorities they had not seen any of the victims with guns. Investigators found both a semi-automatic handgun and a long rifle at the scene.

Police had responded to a call for help at Paddington Place around 7:30 pm and found six people with gunfire.
Jackson identified the victims who died as Mireles Ruiz, of Annapolis; Segovia, of Annapolis; and Mireles Ruiz’s father, Nicholas Mireles, 55, of Odenton, Maryland. The three injured were in stable condition on Monday and are expected to survive.
Smith was held on three counts of first-degree murder, three counts of attempted murder, assault and other felonies.

Police didn’t rule out the possibility of investigating the shooting as a hate crime, Jackson said, but it wasn’t necessarily their focus.
“Apparently our suspect is a white male and the three victims are Latinos,” the police chief said. “But we can’t draw any conclusions from that. We have to look at all possible angles.”

The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting with the investigation, Jackson said.
