On October 8, 2022, a fire broke out on the Crimean Bridge. Russia is using the bridge to reinforce its troops on the occupied peninsula.

Initially, Moscow claimed a “fuel tanker” was on fire, before admitting that a truck had “exploded” on the bridge. There were also reports of a ‘drone attack’.

Russia eventually called the explosion a “terrorist attack” and blamed the “Ukrainian special services” for its organization. Soon after, it launched an attack on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure, seeking to destroy Ukraine’s power infrastructure.

The campaign of missile strikes against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure lasted for months, but petered out in the first few months of 2023, after failing due to Ukraine’s increasingly effective air defenses.
Reacting to news of the Crimean Bridge explosion, Presidential Office adviser Mykhailo Podolyak suggested that Russia itself may be behind the explosion as part of a feud between Russian security services.
NV’s sources said that the Crimean bridge explosion was a special operation by the SBU. The SBU declined to comment on this information.
“We will not comment on this. We will comment on the role of the SBU or any other government agency of Ukraine in the ‘pops’ after our final victory.”
