The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and the Automotive Industry Development Center (AIDC) have partnered and signed an agreement focusing on New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) and skills development.
NEV is a type of vehicle that uses alternative energy sources instead of just traditional fossil fuels. It is specifically designed to be more environmentally friendly and energy efficient with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on non-renewable resources.
These types of cars are usually equipped with an electric powertrain, which consists of an electric motor, battery pack and associated control systems. South Africa had 4 764 NEVs on local roads at the end of 2022, according to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA.
Reports say that the CSIR and AIDC have solidified their partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This will then serve as a framework for joint programs and co-development initiatives, and the companies will collaborate on road mapping studies related to NEVs, explore the conversion and retrofitting of current internal combustion engines to NEVs, as well as opportunities for local availability and conversion of public transport vehicles to NEV buses.
In addition, potential collaborations will be explored for electric scooter/tricycle applications. The collaborations explore the establishment of a public NEV charging station at the CSIR, the localization of charging stations and cross-sector opportunities in battery production.
The two companies are also open to working with small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) within the South African automotive industry. Sipho Mbhokota, Acting Director of the CSIR Group, said this partnership is an important milestone in advancing the growth and development of South African automotive manufacturing. “By supporting the growth of SMEs and stimulating innovation, we aim to create a thriving industry ecosystem and contribute to economic growth.” – he added.
Reports also say that the MOU also focuses on skills development, especially in the context of the fourth industrial revolution. The CSIR and AIDC will provide theoretical, practical and experiential training to equip staff with the necessary expertise to thrive in the evolving automotive landscape.
AIDC CEO Andile Africa said their partnership with the CSIR is a critical step in driving growth and innovation in the local automotive industry. “By embracing smart factory technologies and focusing on skills development, we will improve efficiency, productivity and competitiveness. We are determined to propel the industry to new heights of sustainability and global recognition.” – he added.
