DC black bear sedated, captured after hours

Washington, DC, police officers announced that a black bear was sedated and captured after walking through a local neighborhood on Friday.

Metropolitan Police Department officials initially alerted the public to the sighting of the bear shortly before 7:30am on Friday.

Police reported road closures due to a large black bear.

The animal was spotted by residents around Franklin Street in northeast DC

According to FOX 5 DC, the bear sighting drew crowds and the animal had been there for several hours.

Authorities advised residents to stay indoors as the animal wandered through backyards.

“The bear climbed out of the tree and ran into the backyards of homes in the 1300 block of Franklin Street, Northeast,” MPD tweeted. “If you live on the block, please stay inside.”

Police said the Human Rescue Alliance and a veterinarian from Smithsonian’s National Zoo were at the scene of the black bear’s capture. (FOX 5 DC)

Officials later confirmed the animal’s capture and reported that the bear had been sedated with vets on the scene. The bear was loaded into a large crate and taken away in a truck, according to FOX 5.

Police said the Human Rescue Alliance and a vet from Smithsonian’s National Zoo were at the scene, as was the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
