At least twelve fans died this Saturday in a stampede of fans who went to the Cuscatlán stadium in San savior to see a match of the local soccer tournament between the teams Alliance and FASreported the National Civil Police (PNC).

“The number of deaths after the stampede at the Cuscatlán Stadium amounts to 9,” the security body stated on Twitter.

“Several injured fans are being taken to nearby hospitals, at least 2 of them in critical condition,” the police added.

According to the security body, “the first reports point to a stampede of fans who tried to enter to watch the game between Alianza and FAS.”

The Minister of the Interior, Juan Carlos Bidegaín, said that “first response” institutions of the national Civil Protection system are attending to people affected by the incidents that occurred in Cuscatlán.

The game was suspended while the relief forces evacuated people from the stage. For his part, the Minister of Health, Francisco Alabí, assured that in the hospital network “they are providing medical care to all patients.”

Hundreds of police officers and military personnel showed up at the stadium. The atmosphere was bewildering around the stadium where the intense wailing of ambulance sirens predominated.
