Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, a senior member of the House Freedom Caucus (HFC), indicated Tuesday that if Republicans don’t stop the debt deal in committee, he would consider removing Kevin McCarthy from leadership as House Speaker.

In an interview with Glenn Beck on “BlazeTV” Tuesday morning, Roy called the debt limit deal that McCarthy, R-Calif., struck with the White House this weekend, a “betrayal of the power-sharing deal we put in place.” — that is, the promises McCarthy made to the HFC to give him the votes needed to secure him the speakership after a 15-round ballot battle in January.

Roy says the deal would add at least $4 trillion in US debt with no significant cuts.

Roy said if the deal is approved by the House Rules Committee today, “we’ll have to regroup and rethink the whole leadership arrangement.”

One of the concessions McCarthy made to the HFC in his conquest of the gavel was to reinstate a rule on the procedure for removing an incumbent speaker so that only one member at any time, for any reason, could have a recall vote could enforce.

Roy is one of 10 House Republicans who have said they would vote down the McCarthy-Biden deal.

McCarthy defended the deal in a weekend interview on Fox News Sunday, saying, “It might not do everything for everyone, but this is a step in the right direction that no one thought we could do today.”

FREEDOM CAUCUS MEMBER BLOWS BIDEN DEBT CONDUCT TO STAND GOP

“I will debate this bill with anyone,” he continued. “Is it all I wanted? No, because we don’t have everything under control. But it’s the biggest pullback in history. It’s the biggest budget cut Congress has ever voted for in that process.”

The deal would reclaim some unused funds for the COVID-19 pandemic and provide a cut to funding allocated to the IRS in President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act. It would also suspend the debt limit until after the 2024 presidential election.
