Democratic lawmakers reacted quickly to news that former President Donald Trump had been indicted on charges related to his handling of classified documents, with some saying the former president is not “above the law” and calling his behavior “extremist” and ” toxic.”
“No one is above the law,” Representative Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) said in a Twitter post.
“Trump’s chaos continues,” said Rep. Greg Landsman (D-Ohio) on Twitter. “What he is doing to this country, the extremism and the danger he and his allies pose must end. Only when those who support and enable him decide to put an end to this toxic behavior will all of this be behind us.” lie.”

While many Republican lawmakers accused the Justice Department of interfering in the upcoming 2024 presidential election, Democrats called the charge an “establishment of the rule of law.”

“Trump’s apparent indictment of multiple charges arising from the retention of classified material is another affirmation of the rule of law,” wrote Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) in a Twitter post. “For four years he acted like he was above the law. But he should be treated like any other lawbreaker. And today he has been.”
“Grand Jury Votes to Indict Trump!” tweeted Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), who applauded the decision.
“It’s time we made sure Trump is banned from running for public office again,” he said. repeated Representative Jamaal Bowman (DN.Y.) in a press release.

Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) joined in the celebration, saying the indictment is “one of many steps” to eliminate Trump as a threat to a fair election.
“I will always believe that this twice-deposed former president is a threat to our democracy,” he tweeted.

Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) tweeted a short clip of a crowd of women giving a standing ovation. And Representative Summer Lee (D-Pa.) shared a brief response to Trump’s charge, writing “Good” in a Twitter post along with an image of the former president.
Other lawmakers responded in a more subdued manner, saying Trump is “innocent until proven guilty”.
“Everyone is innocent until proven guilty,” Representative Dean Phillips (D-MN) said in a Twitter post. “But we don’t need a judge or jury to determine whether his destruction of decency and dangerous incompetence continues to tarnish America.”

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) warned Republicans about what he called the “dangerous rhetoric about a ‘two-tier system’.”
“Instead of trying to divide the country and undermine our justice system, Republicans in Congress should respect the outcome of the Special Prosecutor’s extensive investigation and the decisions of the citizens serving on the grand jury,” he said. Raskin. said in a statementwarned that “rhetoric about a ‘two-tiered justice system’ to ‘support’ the former president not only undermines the Department of Justice but also betrays the essential principle of justice that no one is above the orders of the law, not even a former president or a self-proclaimed billionaire.”

It is the second time this year that Trump has been indicted. Trump pleaded not guilty in April after being charged by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg with 34 felonies of falsifying first-degree business records.
