Several drones were shot down as they approached Moscow, regional governor Andrei Vorobyov said.

The Russian capital has been hit by a rare drone strike that caused “minor” damage to buildings and no casualties, the city’s mayor said.

“This morning, at dawn, a drone strike caused minor damage to several buildings. All the city’s emergency services are on the scene… No one has been seriously injured so far,” Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said in a statement Tuesday.

Moscow, located more than 1000 km from Ukraine, has rarely been the target of drone strikes since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, although such attacks are more common elsewhere in Russia.

Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobyov said on the Telegram channel that several drones were shot down as they approached Moscow.

It was not immediately clear who launched the drones.

The Russian state news agency RIA reported that some residents of a building on Moscow’s Profsoyuznaya Street in the south of the city were evacuated.

Videos posted to social media allegedly show drones being tapped, shot down and debris on the ground from an apparent impact on a high-rise building.

Several Russian Telegram messaging channels reported that four to 10 drones had been shot down.
