A young man in England earns his living by doing an odd job and very well paid. In addition, it became a tourist attraction.

There are strange jobs in the world that the vast majority of mortals are completely unaware of. One of them is undoubtedly that of a young man in England for whom he earns more than 5 thousand dollars a month.

The strange task of Corey Grieveson, who is 18 years old, is to keep the seagulls away from the people who visit the modern port of Whitby, on the north-east coast of England, in the province of Scarborough, North Yorkshire.

To accomplish his mission, the young man disguises himself as an eagle and prowls the harbor in an attempt to stop the pesky birds from stealing people’s fish and chips. Something that is quite common, apparently.

Grieveson’s job is strange, yes, but quite lucrative. The young man earns $250 a day, which means that he ends up earning $5,000 a month, although to that must be added the numerous tips he receives daily.

It is that the young man in disguise also seems to have become an attraction. “People love it. They come up to me asking for pictures and all that. I feel a bit like a celebrity,” he tells TeessideLive.

“I just charge at the seagulls when I see them. I also have to watch for them to get close to people, and when they do, I run towards them and push them away,” he explains of his task.

“I’ve always loved birds, particularly big birds. I just wanted to do something that would stand out and make me known,” adds Corey.

However, not everything is “rose color” for the boy. Apparently the gulls take their own retaliation against the “young eagle” who scares them daily.

It’s that in what seems to be a cruel revenge, the birds poop on Corey’s car. “I clean it every day and when I come back, it’s covered in seagull poop. I think they’re trying to get even,” he said.

“I’ve had seagulls hit me on the side of the face with their wing, then duck down and grab your food. They do it so fast you just don’t expect it at all,” the young man says of some of the techniques the birds use. to distract him and achieve his goal.

Corey, who grew up in Whitby, starts work at 6am and patrols the harbor front during the summer months.

Corey hangs around Whitby Harbor during the summer.

Alex Boyd, 31, is the young man’s employer. The man, who co-owns Mister Chips, said he hired Corey near his takeaway on Whitby’s West Pier.

Boyd also stated that since the teen joined, they are delighted with his courageous work and light-hearted banter.

“We’ve been on the pier for several years, and there’s been a big problem with seagulls,” the man explained.

“It just got worse and worse and worse. I tried to put big fake eagles on sticks, but they just figured it out. They knew it wasn’t a real bird. They’re really smart.”

“So I talked to Corey and asked him if he wanted to be a full-time gull scarer in the summer and work inside the store in the winter,” he added.

Corey jokes a bit with the customers. When they go and talk to him, he responds with bird noises. “I don’t speak English, I speak like an eagle.”

“It took me a long time to figure out what we needed: a live deterrent. If you spend $20 an hour to keep customers safe and seagulls away, then that’s good for the store,” Boyd said.

Corey said you have to be “enthusiastic” in the role, but added that the job has its benefits. “It keeps you in shape, it’s a lovely job, really. You’re outside all the time when the weather is good. And when the weather is bad, the seagulls aren’t there.”
