JAKARTA – A magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit the Indonesian island of Java on Friday, but there was no risk of a tsunami, the country’s geophysical office said.

The quake was strongly felt in Surabaya, Tuban, Denpasar and Semarang, Indonesian disaster agency spokesman Abdul Muhari said by telephone.

The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center estimated the magnitude at 6.5 with a depth of 592 km.

“No damage has been reported so far because the earthquake is very deep,” Muhari said.

“I don’t think there will be any damage, but we’ll keep an eye on it.”
