State-owned agency Petroecuador says it’s investigating reason behind spill that contaminated about 4km (2.5 miles) of seashore.

Authorities within the South American nation of Ecuador have confirmed that an oil spill launched about 1,200 barrels into the Pacific, contaminating kilometres of oceanfront.

Rafael Armendariz, transportation supervisor for the state-owned oil agency Petroecuador, confirmed on Thursday that the incident befell a day earlier when a tank within the marine terminal within the port of Esmeraldas surpassed its capability.

“It’s estimated that round 1,200 barrels had been spilled,” Armendariz mentioned at a press convention. “Not all of them fell onto the seashore. A component was contained by the pool within Petroecuador’s services.”
