Egypt By the Lens is a four-part sequence that exhibits how photographers have captured Egypt’s fashionable historical past over 150 years: its kings, presidents, politics, conflicts and cinema.
The third episode tells the tales of Egyptian royal household events by pictures, some formal, some glamorous, all photographs of a bygone period. King Farouk’s marriage ceremony to Queen Farida in 1938 was an extravagant three-day occasion with 4,000 friends together with overseas royalty, world leaders, an enormous marriage ceremony cake, costly jewellery and designer garments. However pictures later revealed a distinct facet to the king’s way of life when early paparazzi images captured him vacationing with younger ladies in Italy. King Farouk went by a divorce and remarried, to a girl he spied on in a Cairo jewellery retailer, in an elaborate six-week ceremony that was much more lavish than his marriage ceremony to Farida.
