The owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, has replaced this Monday, July 24, the logo of the blue bird that has identified the social network since its inception in 2006 with an “X”.

This design change is already seen on the web version of Twitter, but has yet to occur on the smartphone version.

Twitter replaced the logo after Musk – who bought the platform in November 2022 for $44 billion – asked his followers to post logo submissions and noted that if “a good enough X logo” was posted he would use it.

On Sunday the 23rd, the also owner of Tesla and creator of the SpaceX space program pinned a tweet on his profile with a video created by a Twitter user named Sawyer Merritt and changed his own profile picture for the new X logo.

According to the specialized media The Verge, the billionaire sent an email to Twitter employees over the weekend telling them that the company would become X, and that it was the last time he would send an email from a Twitter address.

Last April, Twitter ceased to be an independent company after merging with the new company X Corp.

Musk has a close and long relationship with the letter X: X.com was the original name of Paypal; it’s in your company name SpaceX; in the name of one of the Tesla models; in the name of his artificial intelligence company xAI and is even part of the name of one of his children, X Æ A-12.

It is not the first time that Twitter has changed its logo since it became part of Musk’s empire. In April, the bird logo disappeared for a few days to be replaced by the image of a Japanese shiba inu dog associated with the Dogecoin cryptocurrency, created in 2013 as a joke.

New sources of income

Since Musk bought Twitter, the ad business has partially collapsed as advertisers who rejected mass layoffs gutted content moderation and the mogul’s management style.

In response, the entrepreneur introduced payment services on the platform in order to earn new revenue.

The app could still function as a social platform and also include mobile messaging and payments.

Twitter is estimated to have around 200 million daily active users, but has suffered from repeated technical failures.

Since Musk acquired the social network, many users and advertisers have responded negatively to the new costs of services that were free, as well as the return of right-wing accounts that had been banned.

Earlier this month, Musk said the platform has lost almost half of its ad revenue since October 2022.

Facebook parent Meta launched its own text-based platform, called Threads, earlier this month, which has up to 150 million users, according to some estimates.

However, the time users spend on this new app has fallen over the weeks, according to data from analyst firm Sensor Tower.
