Bradley Gillespie, 50, who escaped from a prison in Lima, Ohio, on May 23, drowned in the Ohio River, a preliminary autopsy shows. Another inmate who escaped with Gillespie, James Lee, was found alive the next day in Kentucky. Gillespie had been imprisoned since 2016 for a double murder.
A man who escaped from a jail in northwestern Ohio earlier this month died of drowning, according to autopsy results released Wednesday.
Bradley Gillespie, 50, was reported missing at Allen Oakwood Correctional Institution in Lima on May 23, along with another man who authorities say escaped with him. Authorities determined that the two escaped by hiding in a dumpster.

The other man, James Lee, 47, was caught the next day in Henderson, Kentucky, after a police chase of a stolen car the men were in ended in a crash and a foot chase, but Gillespie avoided arrest. His body was spotted in the Ohio River on Sunday, not far from the area where he was last seen. Henderson is a city across the river from Indiana and about 350 miles southwest of Lima.

The Henderson County coroner’s office released preliminary autopsy results Wednesday and said toxicology results won’t be available for several weeks.

Gillespie had been imprisoned since 2016 and was convicted of double murder. Lee was serving a sentence imposed in 2021 for burglary and safe-cracking.

A jail major and three detectives have been placed on paid administrative leave, and similar action may be taken against others as the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction’s internal investigation continues, officials said. There is also an ongoing criminal investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
