An ethics hearing expected to take place this week in a case against Nevada’s Republican governor has been postponed.

Former Las Vegas area sheriff Joe Lombardo faces a nearly $1.7 million fine and potential censure for wearing his police badge and uniform in photos and on social media while campaigning for the mansion last year of the governor.

Ross Armstrong, executive director of the Nevada Commission on Ethics, told The Associated Press that the hearing has been moved to July 25. The eight-member commission, charged with interpreting and enforcing the state’s ethics laws, is expected to discuss proposed penalties. to Lombardo at the hearing before issuing an injunction.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Lombardo requested a new date after two committee members indicated they could not attend this week’s hearing in person.

In legal filings, Lombardo’s lawyers have called the proposed sentences “dazzling,” unprecedented, and “based on his use of the same four images on social media during his gubernatorial campaign.”

The recommendation to the committee lists 68 violations of ethics laws. It also urges the appointment of an ethics compliance liaison in Lombardo’s office over alleged violations of a state law that prohibits public officials from using their positions “to obtain or confer unwarranted privileges, preferences, waivers or benefits.”

Lombardo served two elected terms as Clark County sheriff – the administrative chief of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Nevada’s largest law enforcement agency. He resigned in January when he became governor, after defeating Democratic party incumbent Steve Sisolak in November.
