Ethiopia sets up Tigray interim government as part of peace plan

The move comes a day after the Ethiopian parliament voted to remove the TPLF from a list of “terrorist” organizations.

Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has set up an interim government for Tigray, the country’s northern region in the Horn of Africa, an important step in the implementation of a peace plan to end the war there.

The interim administration was established by the upper chamber of Ethiopia’s parliament and appointed Tigray People’s Liberation Front deputy Getachew Reda as head of the interim administration, according to a statement on Abiy’s Facebook page.

It was necessary “to establish an inclusive interim administration, ensure lasting peace and stop conflict,” the statement said.

The decision was one of the agreed outcomes signed as part of a peace pact signed in South Africa in November 2022 between the TPLF and the federal government to end the war in Tigray.

The ceasefire ended the conflict after tens of thousands of people died and millions were driven from their homes.

The lack of an interim government is hampering humanitarian aid in Tigray, where aid workers say millions of people are in dire need of help.

Salaries for civil servants and medical staff have not been paid, and aid organizations have no clear interlocutor, they said.

Thursday’s move comes a day after the Ethiopian parliament voted to remove the TPLF from a list of “terrorist” organizations, a designation dating back to May 2021.
