Europe’s most active volcano has erupted and flights are being canceled as ash pours into the airport.

Planes were grounded and an airport closed last night after Mount Etna erupted. Europe’s most active volcano spewed a huge dark cloud into the sky on Sunday, spewing ash over Catania, eastern Sicily’s largest city, and forcing a suspension of flights at the city’s airport.

No injuries were reported after the explosion, which caused a large plume of molten liquid to erupt from the mountain. Ash was seen falling like rain and covering cars near the volcano.

Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said the ash had fallen in Catania, a city on the inhabited slopes of Mount Etna.

People in the towns of Adrano and Biancavilla reported hearing loud noises coming from the volcano on Sunday, Italian news agency ANSA said.

Departure boards from Catania airport show that many of the flights due to arrive this morning were canceled or diverted to Comiso airport.

By 8 a.m., some flights were reaching the airport’s runway, although most were long delayed.

The 3,357-meter-high volcano, the tallest in Europe, is known to erupt several times a year, although the last major eruption was in 1992.
