Some 1,424 forest fires have affected 62,000 hectares of forests so far in 2023, the Forest Conservation Institute (ICF) in Tegucigalpa reported on Tuesday.

According to records of the IFCthe largest number of forest fires have been recorded between last January and February.

Of the 18 departments of Honduras, Francisco Morazán, located in the central region, where Tegucigalpa, the capital, is located, is the most affected by the fires.

The high temperatures suffered by the Central American country in the first quarter of the year, the burning of the land for agriculture and the criminal hand of man, are among the main causes of forest fires.

According to official records, between 60,000 and 80,000 hectares of forest are affected each year by forest fires in Honduras, a country of 112,492 square kilometers, most of which are mountainous. EFE
