Five people, including two youths and three adults, were injured in a shooting at an apartment complex in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Wednesday evening, police said.

Fort Lauderdale police said the shooting began shortly before 9 p.m. after an escalating argument between two groups of people in the compound’s courtyard, located at Northwest 29th Avenue and 19th Street, WSVN reported.

“At about 8:40 p.m. tonight, in this apartment complex… we had a group of people gathered in the courtyard. A second group of people confronted them,” said FLPD Chief Patrick Lynn. “Gunfire ensued as a result.”

The five victims suffered various injuries and were all transported to Broward Health Medical Center.

Police said one of the adults was treated for life-threatening injuries, while the other four victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

It was not immediately clear whether all injuries were gun-related. Police have not released the ages or identities of the victims.

A woman who witnessed the shooting told WSVN that one of the victims, whom she identified as her boyfriend’s “son”, was shot in the leg.

“When I ran away, it was just – everybody was running everywhere, and then some guys, like two of them, ran around the corner, and they said, ‘I got shot, I got shot,'” the woman, who asked not to be identified, to WSVN.

She continued: “The guy he had blood all over so I ran to the side of one of them because that’s my friend’s son and he got shot in the leg so we just put pressure on his leg and started call the ambulance.”

The unidentified woman said she saw two other victims, one shot in the hand and the other shot in the arm and chest.

Police Chief Lynn said the shooting is still under investigation and investigators are “actively pursuing all investigative leads.”
