Heavy rains in Haiti caused at least 51 deaths, 18 missing and 140 injured, the Civil Defense Directorate said on Tuesday.

Heavy downpours caused rivers to overflow and triggered landslides that affected 39,459 families and displaced thousands of people.

The rains, which started on Friday and intensified over the weekend, forced people to leave their homes, especially in the regions of Ouest, Nippes, Sud-Est, Nord-Ouest and Centre. The Port-au-Prince metropolitan area has also been hit hard.

On Sunday, the government reported the death toll of 15, but officials updated the number of people killed to 42 on Monday.

Prime Minister Ariel Henry said on Twitter that she is working with local and international organizations “to meet daily demands”.

Tuesday’s report does not include those killed in the 4.9-magnitude earthquake that hit the southwestern part of the country earlier in the day. The death toll from the earthquake is currently at four with an undetermined number of injured.

It is the last of the tragedies to affect the country struggling with poverty, hunger, gang violence and political instability.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of life and property damage caused by the earthquake and the suffering of the Haitian people.”

More precipitation is expected through Thursday.
