The governor of the US state of Florida, Republican Ron DeSantis, said today that he will sign the law banning sex reassignment surgery and other related procedures for minors under the age of 18.

“Honestly, some of this debate is completely staged, and when you talk to some people in this industry in the US, they try to cover it up with euphemisms, they say it’s ‘healthcare’ to cut the private organs of a 14 or 15 year old,” said DeSantis, among other things.

“This is not health care, this is a mutilation that we have to take a stand against,” DeSantis said today on the final day of the state legislative session, writes the Daily Mail network.

He is expected to officially announce his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election as soon as the state legislative session ends.

Today, DeSantis appeared to be referring in his speech to “corporate media,” which he has often blamed for maintaining narratives about issues he says he disagrees with.

Fellow Republican Ralph Massullo, who also supported the bill, said children in the U.S. need to reach a point where they can figure out whether they want to change their gender or accept themselves.

Florida’s Republican majority has pushed back some of DeSantis’ priority laws on juvenile and gender issues pushed by Democrats.

He has also banned abortions after the sixth week of pregnancy in this state and is expected to sign a ban on diversity laws promoted by the “liberal” agenda of the incumbent Democrats.

After a historic election cycle, we are taking the opportunity to deliver on our promises to Florida,” DeSantis said today.

“We have secured $2.7 billion in tax cuts and legislation that improve the lives of Florida families,” he said.

The development comes as former Republican President Donald Trump announced his re-election bid in November and has reportedly come out against DeSantis, even though he is not officially in the race.

Trump has urged DeSantis not to run against him in 2024 because he has “not shown well in the polls” and could “hurt the Republican vote.”
