Florida authorities arrested a suspect after his fight with a man at a gas station last month allegedly left the victim brain dead.

Brian Darnold, 29, was charged with negligent homicide. The charges stemmed from a May 1 incident in which Darnold got into a fight at a 7-Eleven in Oviedo.

According to documents obtained by FOX 35 Orlando, Police reported that victim Amir Aryafar, 62, asked Darnold for cannabis. Darnold claims that Aryafar acted aggressively and uttered an expletive after Darnold said he had no weed.

The suspect claims that when his vehicle drove away from the parking lot around noon, he saw Aryafar start running after the car. The defendant then jumped out of the moving car and punched Aryafar.

Although Darnold claims that Aryafar struck out first, court documents show that surveillance video never shows Aryafar striking him. Police also said surveillance footage shows Aryafar was not in the path of the vehicle.

Police reported that Aryafar fell to the ground and hit his head on the sidewalk after the blow. Darnold’s vehicle then made a U-turn and left the scene.

“The suspect or the driver of the vehicle made no attempt to provide assistance,” court documents said.

Due to his severe brain trauma, Aryafar was transported to Florida Lake Monroe Hospital after being admitted to Oviedo Medical Center.

A day after the altercation, he was pronounced brain dead. On May 3, his family removed him from life support.

The Lake County medical examiner’s officer determined on June 19 that the manner of death was homicide. After his arrest, Darnold was transferred to the John E. Polk Correctional Facility in Sanford.
