The body of a Florida teen was recovered Monday morning in a Polk County lake after it “apparently” drowned following a jet ski incident, officials said.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said a preliminary investigation found two teens — a 17-year-old and a 15-year-old — were on a single jet ski Sunday night on Lake Clinch in Frostproof, Florida.

Investigators found that the older teen made an abrupt turn, throwing both of them into the water.

Wearing a life jacket, the 15-year-old made it to the jet ski before looking for the 17-year-old.

Without any success, the younger teen quickly alerted others in the area and a call was made.

The 17-year-old was not wearing a life jacket, the sheriff’s office said, and was eventually found Monday morning in about 20 feet of water using an underwater drone from the Polk County Police Department.

Sheriff Grady Judd said the department’s heart ached for the loss, and he offered his thoughts and prayers to the boy’s family.

“This is a tragic accident and a stark reminder that life jackets save lives,” said Judd. “Please, when you’re on the water, wear a life jacket. It could save your life.”
