Ex-Burnett County District Attorney Daniel Steffen was sentenced to 18 months for secretly recording sexual encounters. Steffen was found guilty of capturing an intimate display of nudity on three counts. Investigators found an iPad containing the sexual videos in Stephen’s home in 2020.

A judge has sentenced a former Wisconsin prosecutor to 18 months in prison for secretly recording sexual encounters with two women, including one he sued in a restraining order.

A jury in April found former Burnett County District Attorney Daniel Steffen guilty of three counts of capturing an intimate depiction of nudity. St. Croix County Circuit Judge Scott Nordstrand handed down the sentence.

A Justice Department agent began investigating Steffen in early 2020, according to the indictment in the case. A witness told the officer that a woman the witness knew had spoken openly about having sex with Steffen in exchange for leniency in her pending criminal cases.

The woman told the officer she had only met Steffen a few times in court and denied having a relationship with him. She said she had several pending cases and eventually had to pay a fine. A few months later, she acknowledged a relationship with Steffen and said she was charged with violating a restraining order and that he was prosecuting her.

A former Wisconsin prosecutor has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for secretly recording sexual encounters with two different women.

Investigators searched Steffen’s home in October 2020 and found an iPad in his dresser, according to the indictment. The iPad contained videos of Steffen having sex with the woman in August and September 2018. The woman told investigators she was unaware he was filming them.

Also on the iPad was another video of Steffen having sex with another woman earlier in 2018. They could be heard talking about how to avoid charges for hitting a mailbox. She told investigators she was unaware he was filming them.

Nordstrand, the judge, also ordered Steffen to two years of extended supervision and four years of probation after he got out of prison.
